Engineering capacity forAustralian companies

A design and engineering team that works inside your business day. We build web applications, platforms and automation for companies in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth — from Silang, Cavite, two hours behind the east coast.

What Blackbyrds Digital does in Australia

Blackbyrds Digital is a digital engineering and technology partner working with Australian companies from Silang, Cavite in the Philippines. We design and build web applications, SaaS platforms, internal tools and AI automation for teams in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Philippine Standard Time is UTC+8 — the same clock as Perth, two hours behind Sydney and Melbourne on AEST, three during daylight saving. That means live standups, decisions inside the same day, and code review while both teams are awake, rather than a handoff you read the following morning. Engagements are scoped and quoted as fixed pieces of work, with no retainer lock-in.

Overlap with our day
The closest working-day fit of any Western market. Perth runs on AWST — UTC+8, exactly the same clock as Manila. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane sit two hours ahead on AEST and three during daylight saving, and Adelaide splits the difference. A normal Philippine day overlaps the Australian one by five to seven hours without either side working unsociable hours.

Asia-Pacific

The Australian context.

Most Australian companies that look outside the country for engineering are not looking for a lower invoice — they are looking for people at all. A senior full-stack or platform engineer in Sydney or Melbourne is being courted by the banks, the miners, a state government department and a well-funded local scaleup at the same time, and the shortlist is short. Roles stay open for months, the salary band moves while you are recruiting, and by the time someone signs, the project that justified the hire has slipped two quarters. Meanwhile the actual work has a shape: a platform to build, a legacy system to replace, a roadmap that needs four people for eight months and one person after that.

The usual objection to working offshore is the clock, and Australia is the market where that objection largely evaporates. Philippine Standard Time is UTC+8, which makes Perth an exact match and puts Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane only two hours ahead on AEST — three when the eastern states switch to daylight saving and Queensland does not. An eleven o’clock standup in Sydney is nine in the morning in Manila. The classic offshore failure mode, where a one-line question costs a full day because it was asked after everyone went home, simply does not happen at this distance.

Blackbyrds Digital has been building software since 2017 and has shipped more than seventy products in that time, across property, logistics, healthcare, financial services, education and industrial operations. Design, strategy and engineering sit in the same team rather than in sequential handovers, because most of the expensive mistakes we get called in to fix were decisions made before anyone wrote code. We are not an outsourcing desk taking tickets — we expect to argue with you about scope early, then be accountable for what we shipped.

Why partner

Why Australian companies work with us.

The timezone is genuinely on your side

Australia is the only Western market where an offshore team can run on the client’s rhythm rather than around it. Pair debugging, a live design review, a decision made and acted on before end of day — all of that is normal here and awkward everywhere else. It also means nobody on either team is doing standups at 10pm to keep a project honest.

Hiring senior engineers here is the actual bottleneck

Hiring a senior engineer in an Australian capital means competing with institutions that can pay more and wait longer, and the wait is the part that hurts — a six-month vacancy is six months of roadmap. Partnering converts a hiring problem into a delivery problem you can schedule against, and lets you staff a build without carrying the headcount after it ships.

Most work has a start and an end

Replatforming an ageing portal, an MVP that has to reach real users, the internal tool operations outgrew — none of these is an indefinite roadmap, and pricing them like one is how a budget disappears. We quote a fixed number in AUD against milestones your finance team can approve inside a financial year, and the engagement ends when the work ships rather than rolling into something you have to cancel.

You get product judgement, not just hands

The failure most Australian buyers describe is a vendor who built exactly what the brief said and left them with something nobody uses. We run discovery before we quote, tell you when a feature is not worth its maintenance cost, and put design and engineering in the same conversation from the first week.

Considerations

What to know.

A near-identical working day changes how you should run the project

Because there is no overnight gap, there is also no overnight progress to wake up to — you are working alongside us, not handing off to us. In practice that means shared Slack channels and a standup rather than a weekly status call, and it means Friday afternoon in Sydney is Friday afternoon in Manila, with no weekend buffer to absorb a late change. Public holiday calendars differ in both directions, including state-specific days like Melbourne Cup Day in Victoria, so we align the calendar at kickoff instead of discovering it in week six.

Australian Privacy Principles and where data actually sits

If you are an APP entity, disclosing personal information to an overseas recipient does not transfer your accountability for it, and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme still applies to you. We design so that the question has a short answer: personal information stays inside your own tenancy and the region you picked, every engineer works from a named account scoped to their task and closed on the last day of the engagement, and the build itself runs on masked or synthetic records except where a task genuinely cannot be done that way. ISO certification we do not hold, and we have never been through an IRAP assessment. Where either is mandatory in your procurement process you will hear it from us at scoping, not from a security reviewer three months later. What we do provide is straight answers on your security questionnaire and a written record of who had access to what.

Contracting, NDAs and whose paper you use

The NDA is signed before discovery rather than after it, and we will work on your paper — an Australian buyer arriving with an MSA and a governing-law clause naming a particular state is not being difficult, and we have no reason to argue the point. What we do insist on is that scope, milestones, acceptance criteria and the change process exist in writing before the first sprint. Projects rarely come apart over a clause somebody read. They come apart over the thing both sides assumed and neither wrote down.

Quoting and invoicing in AUD

We quote in Australian dollars and invoice in Australian dollars against agreed milestones, so your finance team is not reconciling a moving exchange rate against a number you approved three months ago. Payment is by international transfer, terms are set in the engagement agreement, and there is no monthly minimum sitting underneath the project.

Australia FAQ

Common questions.

How much of our working day do we actually share?

Between five and seven hours, depending on your state and the time of year. Perth is an exact match — AWST and Philippine Standard Time are both UTC+8. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are two hours ahead on AEST, and Sydney and Melbourne go to three when daylight saving starts while Brisbane stays put. A mid-morning standup on your side is a comfortable start-of-day on ours.

Do you have an office in Australia?

No. There is one studio, in Silang, Cavite in the Philippines, and every Australian engagement is delivered from it. A Sydney or Melbourne postcode on our website would not put anyone in the room with you, so we do not rent one. What the two-hour offset buys instead is that the distance shows up in how often we meet face to face rather than in how the work runs on an ordinary Tuesday, and we will join whatever video, chat and tracking tools your team already lives in.

Where will our data live, and how do you handle privacy obligations?

In your environment, in the cloud region you nominate — for Australian work that generally means a Sydney or Melbourne region inside your own cloud account, with our engineers issued scoped access to it rather than copies of anything. Day-to-day development and testing run on masked or synthetic records; production data is used only where a task genuinely cannot be done without it. Security questionnaires get answered straight, and that includes writing down the certifications we do not hold when your procurement asks after them.

How do you quote, and are we locked into anything ongoing?

Discovery comes first and is paid or scoped in its own right; the fixed price in AUD, the milestones and the acceptance criteria all come out of it. Nothing has to be held open afterwards — no standing retainer, no minimum term, no queue position you pay to keep. Some clients carry on into a second phase or a support arrangement once the first release is live, but that is a call you make with something working in front of you rather than a box you tick at kickoff.

What do we get at handover, and can our own developers take it forward?

Documentation is scoped as a deliverable rather than offered as a courtesy at the end. The repository and its full history live in your GitHub or Azure DevOps organisation, alongside environment and deployment configuration, architecture notes that say why a decision went the way it did, and a runbook covering anything that has to be operated — scheduled jobs, third-party keys, data imports. Then we walk whoever inherits it through the lot. The test is simple: if your own developers cannot run and change this without us on a call, the engagement is not finished.
