Engineering capacity forNew Zealand companies
A design and engineering team that works inside your afternoon. We build web applications, platforms and automation for companies in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch — from Silang, Cavite, four hours behind NZST.
What Blackbyrds Digital does in New Zealand
Blackbyrds Digital is a digital engineering and technology partner working with New Zealand companies from Silang, Cavite in the Philippines. We design and build web applications, SaaS platforms, internal tools and AI automation for teams in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. New Zealand sits on UTC+12, and UTC+13 through daylight saving, putting us four to five hours behind you — so the NZ afternoon is our morning, a question asked after lunch is answered before you finish the day, and our afternoon runs on for several hours after yours ends. Engagements are scoped and quoted as fixed pieces of work in New Zealand dollars, with no retainer lock-in.

- Overlap with our day
- New Zealand runs on UTC+12, and UTC+13 through daylight saving, which puts it four to five hours ahead of Manila. The New Zealand afternoon is the Philippine morning: from around midday your team and ours are working at the same time, and our day keeps running for several hours after yours ends. Business hours fall on the same calendar date in both countries, so the working week lines up — there is a shared window every day, and it sits in your afternoon rather than your night.
Asia-Pacific
The New Zealand context.
New Zealand is a country of about five million people, and that single fact shapes almost every software decision made here. A product that works domestically runs out of addressable market early, so the roadmap has to serve customers in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom or Asia well before local revenue justifies the headcount to build for them. Multi-currency, region-aware content and someone awake when an overseas customer has a problem stop being version-three concerns and become version-one requirements. The pattern repeats well outside software: exporters in horticulture, seafood, wine and specialty food carry the same need to look credible and stay operable from the other side of the world.
The other constraint is the size of the senior engineering pool. New Zealand produces very good engineers, but there are not many of them in absolute terms and everyone is drawing from the same group — Australian employers who hire here remotely and pay to Australian bands, remote-first companies overseas paying in another currency entirely, the public sector in Wellington, and every local scaleup at once. The problem is not only that a search takes months. It is that the person carrying your architecture in their head is one recruiter call away from a role you cannot match, and a team of five feels that loss immediately and for a long time.
Blackbyrds Digital has been building software since 2017 and has shipped more than seventy products in that time, across property, logistics, healthcare, financial services, education, agriculture and industrial operations. Strategy, design and engineering run as one team rather than a relay, because the costly rework we get called in for almost always traces back to a decision taken before the first commit. This is not a ticket queue. Expect us to push back on scope while changing it is still cheap, and to answer for what we shipped afterwards.
Why partner
Why New Zealand companies work with us.
Your roadmap is sized for export, not for five million people
New Zealand products have to work for overseas customers early, which means the build is bigger than the domestic revenue currently supports. Partnering lets engineering capacity arrive ahead of that revenue instead of trailing it, and lets you staff a market push without carrying the headcount once it has shipped.
The senior pool is small and everyone is recruiting from it
You are hiring against Australian employers who will take the same person remotely, against overseas companies paying in another currency, and against the public sector. The risk is not just a vacancy — it is losing the person who holds the context mid-build. A partner team gives you a second place where that context lives.
Your working day gets longer at the far end
We are four to five hours behind you, so our morning covers your afternoon and our afternoon keeps going after you log off. Reviews opened at four o’clock get looked at, well-specified work continues, and you come back to progress rather than to a list of questions waiting for an answer.
Capacity you can size to a phase
A replatform, an MVP, a push into a new market, the internal tool that finally replaces the spreadsheet — these need a team for a defined stretch, not forever. We quote fixed scopes against milestones so the commercial shape matches the work, and there is no retainer you keep paying to hold your place in a queue.

Considerations
What to know.
Privacy Act 2020, IPP 12 and where personal information actually sits
If you are an agency under the Privacy Act 2020, information privacy principle 12 governs disclosing personal information to an overseas recipient, and the notifiable privacy breach obligations remain yours regardless of whose keyboard the work happens on. How IPP 12 applies to a specific arrangement — including whether an overseas provider processing on your behalf amounts to a disclosure at all — is a call for your privacy counsel, not for us. What we do is design so the question has an easy answer: production personal data stays in your environment and in the region you have nominated, our engineers hold scoped access to that environment rather than copies of the data, development and testing run against masked or synthetic records wherever the work does not genuinely need the real thing, and access is revoked at the end of the engagement. We hold no ISO certification and no New Zealand government security accreditation. If your procurement requires either, we will tell you at scoping rather than let you find out at security review.
Public-sector and government-adjacent work has a gate we do not pretend to clear
A meaningful share of New Zealand technology spend runs through central and local government and the suppliers around them, which brings the Government Procurement Rules, supplier panels, the Government Web Accessibility Standard and record-keeping expectations that flow down from the agency to its vendors. We can build to the accessibility standard, and we can write to the documentation and retention requirements you have been handed. We are not on an all-of-government panel, we hold no security accreditation or personnel clearances, and we are not going to imply otherwise. Where a tender requires those, the sensible arrangement is that we deliver behind a New Zealand prime who does hold them — or we tell you it is not a fit and you have lost an hour rather than a procurement round.
A four-to-five hour offset has a shape, and you should plan around it
This is not the trans-Tasman situation where the whole day overlaps, and it is not the North Atlantic one where nothing does. Your morning is quiet on our side, your afternoon is fully shared — roughly midday until you finish, longer when we start early — and our afternoon runs for several hours after you have gone. Teams that get the most from this batch decisions and reviews into the shared window, specify tickets well enough to survive the quiet hours, and let a lead on our side make the small calls without waiting. Calendars need aligning at kickoff too: New Zealand has regional anniversary days and a Matariki date that moves each year, and the Philippines has a long list of national holidays, so we map both before committing to sprint dates.
Contracting, NDAs and quoting in NZD
We sign an NDA before discovery, not after, and we are comfortable working on your agreement rather than insisting on ours — plenty of New Zealand buyers have a template and a governing-law clause their lawyer will not move on, which is a reasonable position. Scope, milestones, acceptance criteria and the change process go in writing before the first sprint, because the arguments that damage projects are almost always about what was assumed rather than what was written. We quote and invoice in New Zealand dollars against agreed milestones so your finance team is not reconciling a currency that moved since the number was approved, payment is by international transfer, and there is no monthly minimum sitting underneath the project.

New Zealand FAQ
Common questions.
How much of our working day do we actually share?
Four to five hours in a normal day, and it sits in your afternoon. Philippine Standard Time is UTC+8, so we are four hours behind you on NZST and five during daylight saving on NZDT — midday in Auckland is eight in the morning here. We start early where a project warrants it, which stretches the shared window, and our afternoon continues for several hours after you finish, so work in flight keeps moving overnight on your side.
Do you have an office or a company in New Zealand?
No. Blackbyrds Digital is based in Silang, Cavite in the Philippines, and every New Zealand engagement runs remotely from there. We think that is more honest than a serviced-office address nobody works from or a shell entity that changes nothing about how the work happens. We join whatever video, chat and tracking tools your team already uses, and if a project genuinely needs people in a room we scope travel rather than pretend a local address solves it.
Where will our data live, and how does that sit with the Privacy Act?
In the environment and cloud region you nominate, with our engineers holding scoped access to that environment rather than the data moving to us. Development and testing run against masked or synthetic records unless the work genuinely requires production data. How information privacy principle 12 applies to your particular arrangement is a decision for your privacy counsel; our job is to architect so that the answer is straightforward and evidenced, and to complete your security questionnaire honestly — including telling you where we do not hold a certification your procurement may want.
How do you quote, and are we locked into anything ongoing?
We run a scoped discovery first, then quote a fixed price in New Zealand dollars against defined milestones and acceptance criteria. There is no retainer you have to hold to stay engaged. Plenty of clients continue with us after launch for new features or support, but that is a decision you make once the first thing is live, not a condition of starting.
What lands at handover, and could our own developers carry it on?
The repository and its full commit history sit in your organisation, along with environment and deployment configuration, architecture notes explaining why things are built the way they are, and a runbook for the parts that need operating. We run a walkthrough with whoever is picking it up, and access is transferred so nothing is left in an account only we can reach. Commercial terms are agreed per engagement and written into the agreement before work starts. A project that leaves your team dependent on us to keep it running is one we got wrong.
