Software development forAuckland businesses

Auckland sets New Zealand’s engineering salaries and competes with Australian employers for the same people. We supply senior delivery capacity on a four-hour offset, scoped and quoted as a fixed piece of work.

What Blackbyrds Digital does in Auckland

Blackbyrds Digital builds web applications, SaaS platforms and internal tools for Auckland companies from Silang, Cavite in the Philippines. Auckland runs four hours ahead of us on NZST and five on NZDT, so your afternoon is our morning — a decision made after lunch in the CBD is acted on the same day rather than the next one. We work with product companies, financial services, property and construction, healthcare, importers and distributors, and agency partners across the region, on fixed-scope engagements quoted in New Zealand dollars with no retainer lock-in.

Auckland

Auckland in context.

Auckland holds roughly a third of New Zealand’s population and a much larger share of its head offices, and that concentration sets the terms of engineering hiring for the rest of the country. A company in Newmarket or on the North Shore looking for a senior developer is competing with the banks and insurers in the CBD, a handful of well-funded product companies, and increasingly with Australian employers who will hire the same person remotely and pay to a Sydney band without asking them to move. Most of the businesses we speak to here do not have two quarters to wait, and the honest read is that they do not need a permanent engineer so much as a team for the length of a build.

The other Auckland pattern is how quickly the domestic ceiling arrives. Importers, distributors, product companies and service brands here are planning for Australian customers by the second year, which means currency handling, region-aware content, freight and availability logic and support coverage outside New Zealand hours have to be designed in rather than retrofitted. At the same time a great deal of the operational software running the city is a decade-old platform surrounded by spreadsheets, shared inboxes and one person who knows how it all fits together. Neither of those looks like greenfield SaaS. Both need someone who will sit in the operations team’s day and argue about scope before writing code.

The local market

What the Auckland market looks like.

Head offices set the hiring queue

When the CBD institutions and the larger product companies move their engineering bands, everyone else in Auckland feels it — and the Australian employers hiring here remotely have raised the floor again. That pressure is the most common reason a business ends up looking for delivery capacity rather than posting another job ad.

The domestic ceiling arrives early

Auckland companies are usually building for the trans-Tasman market and beyond before the local numbers justify it. Currency, regional content, freight logic and out-of-hours support belong in the first release, not in a later phase that never gets funded.

Agencies and studios with more sold than staffed

Auckland has a dense agency and design market that wins development work faster than it can staff it. We deliver behind that brand — your client relationship, your strategy, your credit, our engineers on the build.

Auckland FAQ

Common questions.

Do you have an office in Auckland?

No — we work from Silang, Cavite in the Philippines, and every Auckland engagement runs remotely. The four-hour offset is manageable because it falls in your afternoon rather than your night: we join your standups, your Slack and your planning sessions in the shared window. If a project genuinely needs people in a room, we discuss travel as part of the scope rather than pretending a local address changes how the work runs.

What does a four-hour offset actually look like across a week?

Your mornings are yours — we are not online yet, so that is deep-work and internal-meeting time. From about midday we are both at our desks for the rest of your day: standups, code review, design decisions, pairing. When you finish, we still have several hours left, which is when well-specified tickets move and reviews get cleared. Most teams settle into batching anything that needs us into the afternoon within a fortnight.

How do we evaluate you when you have not worked in our city?

Fairly, and without a logo wall we cannot stand behind. We do not publish a client’s name or results without their written permission, so we would rather you judge us on the published case studies, which show the systems and the reasoning behind them in detail, and on a paid discovery. Discovery gives you a written scope, an architecture direction and a fixed quote — a real piece of work you can assess before committing to a build.
