Software development forSydney businesses

Sydney sets Australia’s engineering salaries, which makes senior capacity the hardest thing to buy here. We provide it on a two-hour offset, scoped and quoted as a fixed piece of work.

What Blackbyrds Digital does in Sydney

Blackbyrds Digital builds web applications, SaaS platforms and internal tools for Sydney companies from Silang, Cavite in the Philippines. Sydney runs two hours ahead of us on AEST and three on AEDT, so an eleven o’clock standup in the CBD is nine in the morning here and decisions land the same day rather than the next one. We work with financial services, property and strata management, healthcare, professional services and agency partners across Greater Sydney, on fixed-scope engagements with no retainer lock-in.

New South Wales

Sydney in context.

Sydney is where Australian financial services, insurance and a large share of the country’s technology employment sit, and that concentration sets the price and the pace of engineering hiring for everyone else in the city. A mid-sized firm in Parramatta or North Sydney recruiting a senior developer is drawing from the same shortlist as a bank in Barangaroo, a well-funded startup in Surry Hills and a state agency — organisations that can pay above band and wait two quarters for the right person. A Sydney business with a delivery date cannot absorb two quarters of searching, and in most of those conversations the requirement is not a permanent engineer at all — it is a team for the length of one build.

The other Sydney reality is how much of the local economy runs on services rather than software products. Strata and rental portfolios, brokerages, allied health networks, recruitment firms, travel operators — the operating system in each of them is a vendor platform bought years ago, ringed by workbooks and shared mailboxes, with one long-serving person holding the exceptions in their head. That is not greenfield SaaS and it should not be quoted as though it were. It is replacing a mailbox with a structured queue, or collapsing four disconnected tools into one screen people will actually open, and it wants someone prepared to sit with the operations team for a week before drawing anything.

The local market

What the Sydney market looks like.

Financial services sets the salary floor

When the institutions in Barangaroo and Martin Place move their engineering bands, every other employer in Sydney inherits the new floor. That is usually what puts a business in front of us — not a preference for working offshore, but a vacancy that has stayed open through two hiring rounds.

Property and services still run on inboxes

Strata and rental management, brokerages and allied health groups carry a lot of manual coordination that was never worth a product vendor’s attention. Structured intake, self-service portals and a single work queue are usually the highest-return build available to them.

Agencies with more sold than shipped

The agency and consultancy layer between Surry Hills and North Sydney sells build work faster than it can hire for it, and the members area promised in a pitch still has to be written by somebody. That somebody can be us, under your name — you keep the client, the strategy and the credit, and our engineers stay off the thread.

Sydney FAQ

Common questions.

Do you have an office in Sydney?

No — the studio is in Silang, Cavite in the Philippines and every Sydney engagement is run from there. Two hours is a small enough gap that remote stops being the interesting variable: we sit in your standups, your Slack and your planning sessions at hours that are civil on both ends. Where a build genuinely needs someone in a room in the CBD, travel gets scoped and quoted like any other line, which is more use to you than a registered address nobody sits at.

Can your team join our daily standup?

Yes, and we prefer it. A 10:00 or 11:00 standup in Sydney is early-to-mid morning in Manila on AEST, which is a civil hour for everyone. We work in your Jira, Linear or Azure DevOps rather than maintaining a separate tracker and reconciling it later.

Have you worked with Sydney businesses before?

We work with Australian clients. Names and results are only published with a client’s written permission, so instead of a logo wall we would point you at the case studies, where the published work shows the systems and the reasoning behind them in detail — and at a paid discovery, which puts a written scope and a fixed quote in your hands before you commit to a build.
