What is Rough Cut?
A rough cut is the first full assembly of an edit: the chosen takes placed in order to show the story and structure, before pacing, music, colour, sound, and graphics are finished. It exists so the structure can be approved or changed while changes are still cheap.

Editing moves from selects to a rough cut to a fine cut to a finished master. The rough cut answers one question, does the story work, and deliberately leaves everything else unpolished. Reviewing it for typos in captions or the exact colour of a shot misses its purpose; reviewing it for what is missing, what runs long, and what order the argument should take is what it is for.
Software can now assemble a draft from a transcript or a script, which shortens the time to a first rough cut considerably. Deciding which moments carry the piece, and in what order, is still an editorial judgement, and it is the part of the edit that most changes how a finished video lands.
Common questions.
What is the difference between a rough cut and a final cut?
A rough cut fixes the structure: which takes are used and in what order. A final cut, or fine cut, then finishes pacing, transitions, music, colour, sound, captions, and graphics. Feedback on a rough cut is most useful when it is about structure rather than polish.
Should I give notes on a rough cut?
Yes, and the most useful notes are about the story: what is missing, what drags, and what should come first. Changing structure at this stage costs far less than changing it after the edit has been finished.
