What is Hook?
A hook is the opening of a video, usually the first few seconds, whose only job is to stop a viewer scrolling past. In paid social a hook is written and tested as a separate unit: one body edit paired with several different openings to find which one holds attention.

The hook does one measurable job, and the measure is whether a viewer is still watching a few seconds later. The working formats are well known: the outcome shown first, a direct question, a visible problem, a claim that contradicts an expectation, or the product in use in the opening frame. What makes any of them work is specificity to the audience being bought, which is why the same body edit needs different openings for cold traffic and for people who already know the brand.
Because a hook is short and modular, it is the cheapest element of a campaign to test. Three to five openings against one body gives a clean read on which idea earns attention without reproducing the whole video, and the winner usually informs the next round of scripts. Two cautions apply. A hook promising what the rest of the video does not deliver buys attention and spends trust, and hooks that stop working after weeks of delivery are normal rather than evidence of a bad idea.
Common questions.
How long is a hook?
Long enough to land one idea, which in practice is the first one to three seconds of a vertical feed video and a little longer in placements people have chosen to watch. The useful test is whether the first sentence and the first image each say something on their own, without the other.
