What is Answer-First Content?

Short answer

Answer-first content resolves the question it poses in its opening lines — typically a 40 to 70 word paragraph containing the direct answer and a specific figure — before any background or setup. The structure exists so a machine can lift one self-contained passage and a reader can stop after one paragraph.

Also called: Answer-first writing, Inverted pyramid content

The failure mode it corrects is the standard article opening: three paragraphs of context, then the answer in the middle of the page. A human skims past that; an extraction system frequently misses it entirely, or lifts the setup instead of the answer.

Writing this way imposes a useful discipline. A passage that must stand alone cannot lean on pronouns pointing at earlier sentences, cannot defer the number to a later section, and cannot hedge indefinitely — so the vagueness that survives in conventional copy becomes visible immediately.

Common questions

How long should the opening answer be?

Roughly 40 to 70 words. Long enough to be a complete, standalone answer with a concrete detail in it; short enough to be lifted whole. If the answer needs qualification, put the qualification in the following paragraph rather than hedging inside the passage meant to be extracted.
