Search, AEO & AI Visibility

What is AI Overviews?

Short answer

AI Overviews are Google’s generated summaries shown above the traditional results for many queries, assembled from multiple web sources and displayed with links to them. They answer the query in place, which reduces clicks to the underlying pages while making the cited sources considerably more visible.

For a local service business the practical effect is compression: where a results page once offered ten organic options, an overview may synthesise two or three, and the businesses named inside it capture attention the rest no longer receive. Being one of the named sources matters more than holding a mid-page ranking.

The sources an overview draws on skew toward pages that answer the question directly and toward third-party corroboration — directories, review platforms and editorial listicles — rather than exclusively toward the brand’s own site. That is why on-site work alone rarely produces inclusion for competitive commercial queries.

Common questions

How do you get into an AI Overview?

There is no submission process. Inclusion correlates with answering the query directly and early on the page, being corroborated by independent sources, and having current, specific content. For local commercial queries, presence in the directories and review platforms the overview draws on is usually the missing piece rather than on-page tuning.
